Rico Ramos Comes From Behind To Kayo Akifumi Shimoda in AC

Published

Rico Ramos scored the victory in the TV opener, when he unleashed a left hook from hell in the seventh round, which felled WBA super bantamweight champion Akifumi Shimoda. Shimoda, the first Japanese champion to come to the States to defend a title, tried to get up, and was almost aloft at nine, but he stumbled, and the ref said no mas.

Things hadn't been going all that swell for Ramos (20-0 with 11 KOs; age 24; from California) against the Japanese fighter, age 26. The 26 year-old Shimoda, who'd been down just once previously, falls to 23-3-1.

The end for the lefty, whose pressure had him well ahead on the cards,  came at 2:46 of the seventh.

It will be no consolation to the now ex champ that he went 105-424, to 90-273 for Ramos,  in the stat column.

—Cris Arreola got the W, against Friday Ahunanya, in a heavyweight tangle. He took some shots in the fourth, but collected himself, and got the nod after ten rounds.
