Martirosyan To Fight Angulo, Winner Gets Canelo
The World Boxing Council has confirmed the final elimination bout to determine the mandatory contender in the super welterweight division – No. 1 ranked Vanes Martirosyan vs. No. 2 ranked Alfredo Angulo – and a date has been set for Friday, September 23, to hold a purse offer in case no agreement is reached between the promoters during the free negotiations period.
The winner of Martirosyan-Angulo will be the mandatory challenger, which will create tremendous enthusiasm in the boxing world.
WBC super welterweight world champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will defend the title in a voluntary fight against Alfonso Gomez at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on September 17 as part of the historic event, “Star Power,” which will feature three WBC world championship fights showcased on HBO pay-per-view. In the main event, Floyd Mayweather will challenge WBC welterweight world champion Victor Ortiz, and Erik Morales will battle Lucas Mathysse for the WBC super lightweight world championship.

WBC President Dr. José Sulaimán said, “I feel tremendously impacted by the declarations of
our former champion of the world, Oscar de la Hoya, and I understand the terrible depression through which he recently lived. But at the same time, we are very pleased to see that Oscar is turning into an example for the youth of the world by expressing the terribly damaging effects of alcohol and the cancer of our contemporary society, drugs, as well as his struggle and efforts to find rehabilitation to defeat such a dangerous rival, as he is already doing.
“Only great champions like Oscar have the will of a tiger to confront evil and defeat it, just as he is doing today, to strengthen his image of idolatry. The WBC strongly stays in his corner, just as we have always done with all other boxing heroes that have defeated such a terrible cancer.”
