Juan Carlos “Miniburgos” Burgos Re-Ups With Thompson and Banner Promotions

EAST L.A.-After wowing several thousand fans at Madison Square Garden and millions watching on television, Juan Carlos Burgos could have signed with a number of promoters who were impressed by his talent.

Instead, he signed another contract with co-promoters Thompson Boxing Promotions and Banner Promotions.

Tamayo restaurant, famous for its collection of Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo’s paintings, was the setting on Wednesday for the contract signing between Burgos and his old promoters. The Mexican junior lightweight from Tijuana said it succinctly about re-signing with his promoters.

“I want to make Thompson Boxing Promotions and Banner Promotions proud of me,” said Burgos, 25. “They believed in me and gave me a great path with two world title attempts. It’s time for me to pay them back.”

It was five months ago that “Miniburgos” roughed up WBO junior lightweight titlist Roman Martinez of Puerto Rico during their title fight in NYC. After 12 rounds, one of the judges, Tony Paolillo, scored it heavily for Martinez while another judge, John Signorile, saw it a draw. It was another example of poor judging and of visiting Mexican fighters getting stiffed in a New York prizefight.

“I’ll never fight in New York again,” said Burgos. “There are too many obstacles to carry on my back. Those two judges are responsible for putting my career back.”

The junior lightweight from Tijuana said he is putting that fight in the past and looks to move forward against any of the junior lightweight world champions. But he did want to emphasize that he felt he owed his promoters for getting him a chance to showcase his talent to the world.

“Twice I’ve fought for a world title. I know many fighters who have never fought for a world title,” Burgos told the press.

Ken Thompson (pictured above, left, next to Burgos, Art Pellullo, Alex Camponovo, in Al Applerose photo) president of Thompson Boxing, said he was extremely pleased by Burgos’ decision.

“It’s a big day for everyone. It’s a special day,” Thompson said, adding that it was Camponovo who spotted Burgos. “Alex has an eye for champions.”

Pelullo, president of Banner, said he was excited about working with Thompson Boxing and Burgos again.

“He likes me more than my own family,” said Pelullo.

Burgos said he’s ready to win a world title for his family and for his promoters who believed in him.

“Now it’s time to pay them back,” Burgos reiterated.
