Deontay Wilder Thinking He'll Get Arreola-Stiverne II Winner
Deontay Wilder has been getting into the holiday spirit, American style, and giving his wallet a workout. The Alabama boxer has three kids, age 8, 3 and about to turn 3, and he told me he's especially psyched about a big ole swingset he's ponied up for.
But, the 28-year-old fighter said, he's gotten wiser in his advancing years, as he's figured out, sometimes it's better to outsource. He'll hire someone to put the behemoth together.
On the subject out sourcing tasks to others…Wilder (30-0 with 30 KOs) said he's been in contact with uber advisor Al Haymon, and he's thinking, from what the dealmaker tells him, he has a good shot at the getting the winner of the Chris Arreola-Bermane Stiverne rematch. Those two will clash for the WBC crown, which is being left up for grabs by champ Vitali Klitschko, who's going all in in politics, in the Ukraine.
Stiverne beat Arreola when they tangled last April 27, and the site and date of their re-do is still being determined. “We're trying to figure out my next fight now,” Wilder told me, “and it's possibly the winner of Arreola-Stiverne II. We will know in a week or two probably.”
Back to that American tradition of shopping till you drop. Wilder told me that he's an old soul, who likes to ponder a more traditional view of Christmas, that of the tale of the birth of the man seen as the savior in some circles. But that doesn't mean he's not above getting some goodies for the kids. And, I asked, will that include a title belt to show off back in Bama in 2014?
“I'm definitely gonna get that!” he said.
