Sugar Ray Leonard Will Be At Aug. 9 Nevada Boxing Hall Gala
SUGAR RAY LEONARD TO ATTEND NVBHOF INDUCTION DINNER
LEONARD TO HAND FORMER RIVAL DURAN THE TROPHY
In another example of fierce rivals coming together at the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony/Dinner, Sugar Ray Leonard has announced he will not only attend the Induction of Panamanian Roberto Duran, but join him on stage. The magical evening, which also includes the bringing together of Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson, will take place Saturday night, August 9 at the Cohiba Ballroom inside The New Tropicana, Las Vegas.
Leonard was a 2013 Inductee in the Inaugural NVBHOF Event. Duran is being inducted in the same category, “Non-Nevada Residents”, for the 2014 Class. The two engaged in an historic trilogy, Duran winning the first fight in Montreal, a bitter and brutal 15-round slugfest. Leonard prevailed in the next two: in New Orleans in the 8th round when Duran waived off the bout, and Las Vegas by decision. That final bout of the trilogy marked the opening event for Steve Wynn’s Mirage Hotel and was refereed by Richard Steele. Both Wynn and Steele are also being inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame on August 9.
While Mike Tyson will make the presentation speech for Holyfield, Duran’s daughter Irichelle will give the presenting speech for her father. Following Roberto’s acceptance remarks, Leonard will join him on stage, and present him with the NVBHOF Trophy.
NVBHOF President Rich Marotta said, “This will be a night that boxing fans in attendance will remember forever. Leonard and Duran together, Tyson and Holyfield together, and a stellar cast of inductees and honorees getting their just due for what they mean to boxing in Nevada. I’m proud of how this night is coming together”.
Remaining tickets at $300 and $175 can be purchased online at the
Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame website: www.nvbhof.com
