UPDATED FRIDAY: What About Terence Crawford vs. Chris Algieri?
FRIDAY AFTERNOON UPDATE: Sorry, NYC area fight fans…The March 21 card is up in smoke. Things didn’t come together the right way, and Top Rank pulled the plug Friday afternoon, according to exec Carl Moretti. He didn’t wish to specify exactly why. I heard on the grapevine that the choice of perfect foe for Terence Crawford was at least a component to the scrubbing of the date. Chris Algieri was rumored to be lead dog for a date with Bud…Crawford trainer/advisor Brian MacIntyre told me they will regroup and figure out a Plan B for Bud within a couple weeks…

Carl Moretti of Top Rank tells me that the March 21 MSG Theater show to feature Terence Crawford against someone may or may not be a go. He will know tomorrow, Friday, by early afternoon, most likely, he told me.
Moretti said some factors have to fall into place, and wouldn’t specify what those are. Perhaps choice of foe for Crawford, and what purse that targeted foe might accept? I do not KNOW…
HBO boxing boss Ken Hershman was asked if Chris Algieri might be a foe for Terence Crawford on Wednesday, at a presser for the April 25 showdown between the champ at heavy, Wladimir Klitschko, and Philly fighter Bryant Jennings.
Hershman said he didn’t think there had been really substantive discussions about the Long Islander Algieri gloving up vs. the Nebraskan at HBO “as of yet.”
The exec said the man he termed “a great guy” took on Pacman, and while we know he lost, “it sometimes it takes a little while” to get back to the front of the line. “We’ll see what happens,” he said.
What about Algieri on BAD?
“There are so many planes on the runway backed up, in trying to get all this organized and sorted and scheduled, it’s been a real challenge. So when we’re at the right time to consider Chris, we will.”
There ya have it, friends. No “there” there, not yet anyway…
