Give Us A Rematch, Says Team Pascal To Kovalev
Give us a rematch, Team Pascal tells TSS after their man impressed mightily against Sergey Kovalev on March 14, with his heart and stone galore. Pascal looked to be dead meat in round three, at La Bell Centre, but recuperated and had his moments in the next four plus rounds. Though the ref pulled the plug on the Haitian-bor Montrealer in round eight, the 32-year old ex light heavy champ with a 29-3-1 mark would like another crack at the Russian, who had to work quite hard to get this W.
“We want the rematch,” advisor Greg Leon told me. “The stoppage was a tad early for a fighter down only once in his entitre career! And one that had shown an ability to recover.”
And was there a rematch clause in the contract? “Only if we won,” said Leon. “But I believe HBO will want a rematch, it’s a good TV fight. And where can Kovalev make more money, than on HBO in a rematch?”
Now, Nadjib Mohammedi is ranked No. 1 by the IBF and is supposed to get a crack at the IBF champ, Kovalev. Do we think the Frenchman Mo will fight Kovalev, in Kovalev’s next bout? The IBF won’t permit their No. 1 guy to not get a crack, so Mo’s American advisor Vince Caruso believes, and thus he thinks the sanctioning body will push hard for Krusher’s next fight to be against Mohammedi.
What about it, Kovalev manager Egis Klimas? Rematch next, or the IBF business? “Mohammedi first,” Klimas told me.
Promoter Kathy Duva, what say you? Rematch time? “Someday, very likely. But IBF mandatory with ?Nadjib Mohammedi is next. If Sergey beats Nadjib, the IBF will order their champion to meet him next after that. Lots of possibilities. Very exciting!”
