About That Golovkin vs. Canelo Sparring…
More often than one might think, fighters get a look at each other, get an up close scouting report on each other, before they fight for real.
For instance…If some folks get their wish, we could see Gennady Golovkin, the be all end all at middleweight, get challenged by the Mexican heart-throb/hitter, Canelo Alvarez, at 160.
Canelo says let him grow into that class, says he’s comfortable at 154 for now…but seems open to at some point tangling with the fighting pride of Kazakhstan.
On the Wenesday night edition of The Fight Game, we heard the redhead say that he’s sparred a few times with Golovkin, back a few years, and yes, he’d be open to doing it for real.
Hmm..I reached out to Golovkins’ trainer, Abel Sanchez.
Was he present for that sparring? How did it go?
“Of course I was. I think it was two times in my gym, in 2011 or 2012. Canelo was 21,” Sanchez said. How did it go? Did you have thoughts at the time, these guys might one day do it for real?
“GGG is nice guy and not abusive in sparring, he lets people work,” Sanchez said. “Doug Fischer was there for one of the sessions and wrote about it.”
And..did that work maybe inform you how a fight between them might look in 2016?
“I hope it happens,” said Sanchez, and I think I could hear the wink of his eye.
