WBA Light Heavyweight Title on Line in Re-Match

WBA Light Heavyweight Title on Line – WBA World Lightheavyweight champion Juergen Braehmer (47-2) is set to make the sixth defense of his belt as he faces Eduard Gutknecht (29-3-1). The fight is set to take place in New Brandenburg, Germany this Saturday, March 12th and the fight is set to air on SAT 1.

The sport books have Braehmer a big -1100 favorite, with the comeback on Gutknecht paying +700. The fight is a re-match of a February of 2013 meeting that saw Braehmer win a unanimous decision (114-113, 116-111, 117-110). Since then, Gutknecht has gone 5-1-1, including winning four in a row.

Braehmer is now 37 years old, and he has not lost a fight in more than seven years. He is the subject of some controversy, as he has fought his entire career in Germany. He maintained a fine record and he has held the WBO and WBA versions of the Light Heavyweight world championship, but he has faced calls throughout his career to fight outside of his comfort zone.

Back in the first half of 2011, Braehmer was scheduled to defend the WBO Light Heavyweight he then held against England’s Nathan Cleverly. Braehmer pulled out of the fight with just three days notice, claiming an eye injury. The WBO stripped Braehmer of the belt. The fight with Cleverly has been talked about on several occasions since, but it has never materialized.

Braehmer was originally scheduled to meet undefeated South African Thomas Oosthuizen (25-0-2), but the 27 year old was pulled from the fight by Oosthuizen promoter Rodney Berman, siting substance abuse problems. When that match-up came apart in early February, Cleverly once again challenged Braehmer, but the German’s camp settled on Gutknecht as the final opponent.

The entire live event numbers eight fights in all, with the undercard featuring four, six and eight round fights before the twelve round main event. The line-up is listed below.
