Erickson Lubin Takes TSS 2016 Prospect of the Year – Undefeated super welterweight contender Erickson Lubin has been named the 2016 Prospect of the Year here at The Sweet Science.

It isn’t like the 21-year-old has not been on the radar for a long-time now. As a former National Golden Gloves champion, Lubin has been on the fast track since starting his pro career in late 2013 at age eighteen. As an amateur, he was ranked as America’s top hope for an Olympic Gold Medal, something no American man has achieved since Andre Ward back in 2004.

In 2016, Lubin registered four wins over opponents who were collectively 99-9-2.  The year prior, he went 5-0 and his opponents had combined records of 95-20-3, so for two years running he has successfully handled solid competition. Lubin has gone from 8 rounders to the 10 rounders in that time period, even going the full ten round distance in January of 2016 with Mexican veteran Jose de Jesus Macias. That fight aired on Bounce TV in the United States.

In his second fight of 2016, Lubin faced 38-3 Daniel Sandoval, and he fought the fight up a weight class in the middleweight division. The fight was part of the Premier Boxing Champions card featuring Andrjez Fonfara versus Joe Smith Jr that aired on NBC, and Lubin had no trouble with the extra weight, stopping Sandoval in the 3rd round.

Lubin then went on to face 20-1 Ivan Montero on the undercard of Deontay Wilder’s WBC world heavyweight title defense against Chris Arreola that aired on Fox Sports 1. There, he won a UD, winning every round on the judges scorecards.

Lubin closed the year with a showcase on Showtime, as he faced 23-1 Juan Ubaldo Cabrera in support of the Jermall Charlo versus Julian Williams IBF 154-pound world title bout. Lubin made it a short night as he stopped Cabrera at the 2:09 mark of round two.

The super welterweight is penciled in for a 12-rounder in March underneath the showdown between undefeated welterweights Danny Garcia and Keith Thurman, where he faces once-beaten Jorge Cota (25-1) of Mexico. That fight is Lubin’s first fight scheduled for 12 rounds, another signal that 2017 is the year that will see him emerge as a full blown contender in the talent-laden 154-pound division.

Lubin had the good fortune of appearing on American television four times this year and at no time was he put in danger in any of the bouts. For the last two years he has faced steady competition and he has handled every fight with relative ease. Erickson Lubin is your 2016 Prospect of the Year.
