Fres Oquendo Returns on Broadway Boxing

NEW YORK (January 11, 2006) – Heavyweight contender Fres Oquendo will return to action and make his DiBella Entertainment debut when Broadway Boxing, presented by Turning Stone Resort and Casino, gets the 2006 season underway on Thursday night, February 16, at The Grand Ballroom at Manhattan Center.

The featured attraction will be a 10-round heavyweight affair. A Chicago native of Puerto Rican heritage, Oquendo boasts a 24-3 career mark, including 15 victories by way of knockout. The “Big O” captured his first 22 career fights, turning back the likes of David Izon, with a third round TKO at the Javits Center which vaulted Fres to leading contender status, as well as scores over Obed Sullivan, Maurice Harris and Clifford Etienne. 

His only three career setbacks came at the hands of leading heavyweights David Tua, former world heavyweight champion John Ruiz, and current world heavyweight champion Chris Byrd.  The Byrd loss was a controversial 12-round decision in an IBF heavyweight title fight on September 20, 2003.

The knockout artistry of Brownsville's Curtis “Showtime” Stevens will also be showcased in the co-feature bout. It took Stevens one left hook to score a first round knockout over Kia Daniels, improving his unblemished record to 10-0, with 9 by way of knockout. Stevens looks to continue his knockout streak in the 168 pound division on February 16 in front of a hometown crowd. Stevens will compete in a super middleweight eight-rounder.

Up and coming middleweight Juan Cabrera (2-0, 1 KO), fighting out of New York by way of Santo Domingo will appear in a four-round contest, while light heavyweight Ronald Newbold, another Dominican prospect, will be making his pro debut.
