Corrales Fails To Make Weight
Diego “Chico” Corrales comes in over the lightweight limit
It was almost like deja vu all over again.
At Friday’s weigh-in for Diego Corrales‘ defense of his WBC 135-pound title against Joel Casamayor, Corrales came in an eye-popping five pounds over the lightweight limit.
Corrales was given time to make weight and returned weighing 139½. He was given an additional two hours and managed to drop another half pound in the sauna.
Kevin Iole in the Las Vegas Review-Journal writes that Corrales said his body wouldn’t let anything go.”
Corrales’ promoter Gary Shaw, who insists he checked Corrales’ weight ten days ago and it was just under 142, admitted, according to the AP, It’s (his fighter not making weight) terribly ironic. I’m shocked. I don’t know what to say.”
For those whose memories are as short as a prelim fighter’s purse, it may be doubly ironic considering Corrales’ last opponent, Jose Luis Castillo, failed to make weight by three pounds for their June trilogy, creating a big boxing scandal du jour. For that infraction Castillo was fined $250,000, had his license suspended for the remainder of the year, and Corrales and his promoter sued Castillo’s promoter Bob Arum for being inattentive and allowing the debacle of not making weight to occur in the first place.
And now that Corrales has failed to make weight for his third fight with Casamayor, Chico has been stripped of his title by the WBC, he’ll be fined by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (There will be a fine,” said the NSAC executive director Keith Kizer), and if history is any guide, he’ll get suspended, sued, his reputation tarnished, his status besmirched, his future as a marquee fighter in doubt.
