Lipinets Hand Injury Doesn’t Look Good – Just yesterday, the news came out that the planned February 10th encounter between Sergey Lipinets and Mikey Garcia is off. Lipinets was set to make the first defense of his IBF 140-pound world title against Garcia, but a hand injury has forced Lipinets to postpone the fight.
Lipinets, 13-0 as a pro, won the belt vacated by Terence Crawford this past November when he outpointed Japan’s tough Akihiro Kondo. Lipinets, who is originally from Kazakhstan, did not look to take any time off after winning the belt, signing almost immediately for the test of Garcia, who is a formidable 37-0 and is a fighter looking to win a world championship in a fourth weight class.
Garcia represented a step up into the world class level of competition for Lipinets. Garcia has held world titles at featherweight, super featherweight and lightweight and the 30-year-old Californian has become a fixture on most of the pound for pound lists. Lipinets was eager for the recognition a win over Garcia would bring him. Word is that the showdown with Garcia has been postponed and the entire card will be re-scheduled. Check out TSS editor Arne K. Lang’s piece reporting the injury for more details right here.
Our sister site TBC had their roving cameraman Marcelino Castillo and his network in California this week and they caught up with Lipinets in Los Angeles. The injury was still fresh as Lipinets held up his swollen mit for the cameras. After seeing the picture, there is little doubt that Lipinets could not be ready for the original February 10th date.
