Abdullah Wins Rematch and Other Montebello, Calif. Results

MONTEBELLO, Calif.-A rematch between super lightweight prospects proved just as fiery as their first encounter but Ikeem Abdullah found the remedy this time to walk away with the victory on Sunday.

It was the final boxing card for Ed Holmes All Star Boxing and Abdullah (4-0-1) proved hungrier than Gerardo Alvarez (1-2-2) in winning by unanimous decision at the Quiet Cannon golf course. Each round was paper thin close.

The last time Abdullah met Alvarez they ended in a draw after four turbulent and fiery rounds in Burbank. That was this past August. In this fight Abdullah (pictured on the left) turned up the heat and stormed his way through the barrage of blows fired by Alvarez.

Surprisingly no knockdowns too place but each found their best punches land.

After four rounds two judges saw it 39-37 and a third 40-36 all for Abdullah who fights in Los Angeles but formerly lived in Chicago.

In a lightweight clash Daniel Cruz of Chino (4-0) used his speed to overwhelm San Antonio’s taller Elliot Brown (2-14) and win by unanimous decision after four rounds. Cruz was caught several times diving in with solid blows by Brown but was able to absorb the punches. Still, Cruz needs to learn how to circle his foes and not fire more than three-punch combinations in the prizefighting world. He was able to out-box Brown but in the future may run into a big puncher who knows how to time combination punchers.

Jesus Torres Beltran (1-0) won his pro debut by second round knockout over Northern California’s Ryan Attebery in a super featherweight match. A four-punch combo floored Attebery in the second round. After he got up, Torres Beltran belted him with a dozen unanswered blows forcing the referee Wayne Hedgepeth to stop the fight at 1:07 of the second round.

A lightweight clash ended even quicker when Baldwin Park’s Roman Puga (1-0) blasted out Phillip Schwartz in 23 seconds with a three punch combination that chopped down the taller fighter with a thud. Schwartz (0-4) seemed able to recover after the fight.

Jose Elias (2-0) defeated tough Misael Chacon (3-20-3) by unanimous decision after four super featherweight rounds but it didn’t come easy. Chacon battled each and every second of the fight but was unable to match Elias accuracy. Two judges scored it 40-36 and a third 39-37 all for Elias.
