Anthony Joshua Injured in Fatal Car Crash in Nigeria
LAGOS, Nigeria — December 29, 2025
British-Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua, the former unified world heavyweight champion, was involved in a serious car accident in Nigeria on Monday, authorities and news agencies report. Two people died in the collision, and Joshua sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
According to statements from the Ogun State Police Command and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the crash occurred around 11 a.m. local time on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Makun, a busy highway in southwestern Nigeria. The Lexus SUV in which Joshua was riding lost control and collided with a stationary truck parked on the roadside.
Preliminary investigations by the FRSC suggest the vehicle was traveling above the speed limit and attempting an overtaking maneuver when it lost control, leading to the fatal crash. Two of the occupants in the SUV died at the scene, and their bodies were taken to a morgue in Sagamu.
Eyewitnesses and social-media footage from the scene reportedly show Joshua being helped from the wrecked vehicle while visibly shaken and wincing in pain, though conscious.
Police confirmed that Joshua, 36, was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. As of the latest reports, his exact medical condition has not been publicly disclosed. Local officials have extended condolences to the families of those who died and said a thorough investigation of the accident is ongoing.
Joshua, born and raised in the United Kingdom to Nigerian parents and having spent part of his youth in Nigeria, was in the country following his recent boxing activity. On December 19, 2025, he scored a sixth-round knockout victory over YouTube-turned-boxer Jake Paul in a high-profile bout in Miami, which many saw as a step toward a potential return to world title contention.
The crash comes as Joshua was reportedly in talks for a potential 2026 fight with fellow British heavyweight Tyson Fury, though no official fight date has been set.
Further updates are expected as police and road safety officials continue their investigation and as more information becomes available about Joshua’s condition.
