Artemio Reyes Jr. Returns to Score Sixth Consecutive Knockout

After many changes and injuries welterweight Artemio Reyes Jr. finally stepped in the Ontario ring after eight months and scored his sixth consecutive knockout. This time Abraham Osuna was the victim, on Friday.

Before another raucous crowd Reyes (22-2, 18 Kos) put some doubts to rest with another commanding performance at the Doubletree Hotel. Injuries had kept him from fighting last April on the Thompson Promotions fight card.

Reyes changed training camps and now works under the brothers Joel and Antonio Diaz in Indio, California. He makes the 160 mile round trip almost daily.

Behind his lanky tight defensive posture, Reyes needed only two rounds to figure out Osuna (16-6-1, 7 Kos) and end his night with three knockdowns including the final one at 2:01 of round two. All were right hands. Reyes, 27, is finally back.

Other bouts

San Diego southpaw Giovanni Santillan (13-0, 7 Kos) used his speed and combination punches to power through eight rounds to defeat Joaquin Chavez (7-14-3) in a junior welterweight match up. Santillan had the advantage with his speedy attack but Chavez hung in to make it a fight. The scores were 79-72, 78-73, 78-74.

L.A.’s Danny Roman (9-2-1, 4Kos) used a persistent body attack on the speedy Jonathan Arellano (13-3-2, 3 Kos) to keep the Ontario prizefighter off-balance. In the eighth and final round of the junior featherweight contest, Roman floored Arellano twice to nail the fight in his favor. The fight went to the scorecards and Roman was ruled the winner by unanimous decision.

Puerto Rico’s Ken Alvarez (6-0-2, 3 Kos) made the flight to California and ran into a problem against Joshua Marks (8-5-1, 8 Kos), a southpaw junior welterweight slugger. After six tense rounds Alvarez and Marks fired away evenly so the judges scored it a draw. Alvarez remained undefeated. Marks, who is trained by Antonio Diaz, received his first draw.

Arizona’s Cesar Valenzuela (8-3-1, 3 Kos) used his reach to make things difficult for Santa Ana’s Erick Ituarte (7-1-1) and hand him his first loss. After six rounds of a junior lightweight contest all three judges scored in favor of Valenzuela 58-56, 59-55, 59-55.
