Arum Says One Legal Hurdle To Pacquiao-Mayweather Is Not An Issue Any More
Click something else if you don’t want to talk about a potential Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather fight, friends.
I know that subject makes some of you queasy, or narcoleptic.
But promoter Bob Arum does get asked about it, and in fact, in talking to a San Francisco paper last week, talked about (fantasized about?) doing two Pacquiao-Mayweather fights next year. Is that just so much cannabinoid talk, or is there anything to that? Has he spoken to Mayweather people about that plan, talked to Floyd Mayweather and/or the Wizard of Al Haymon?
“I’ve had no conversations with Mayweather or Haymon, none, zero,” Arum told me. “But I have been told and can say without any fear of contradictions that the networks have discussed (a Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather fight) and they have come to an agreement to their role in the fight, how they would do it similar to the Mike Tyson-Lennox Lewis fight. That was a legal impediment, and it’s no longer an impediment.”
Arum didn’t disagree when I said that I’m guessing that he’d gone over the head of Showtime boxing boss Stephen Espinoza and HBO boxing boss Ken Hershman, to higher or highest level suits, like Les Moonves, who runs CBS and Showtime, and the HBO chairman, Richard Plepler. “I don’t want to get into that, but your assumption would be correct.”Arum said no, he doesn’t just bring up a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight to promote Manny events, noting that he gets asked about it, so he answers.
