Avila Perspective, Chap. 224: Golden Boy Hits Pomona and More Fight News

POMONA – Led by Oscar De La Hoya, Golden Boy Promotions ventures into the land of Sugar Shane Mosley in Pomona, California.
Yes, that’s Sugar Shane’s domain.
That’s ok, the Golden Boy has a pass and that comes in the form of Shane Mosley Jr., the son of the Hall of Fame fighter. And like his dad, he calls Pomona home.
“I’m happy to be in my hometown,” said Mosley Jr. “I’m looking to be a world champion.”
Mosley Jr. (18-4, 10 KOs) meets Mario Lozano (33-10, 24 KOs) in the co-main event on Saturday Feb. 18, at the Fox Theater in Pomona. DAZN will stream the Golden Boy Promotions fight card.
All the Mosleys were in attendance at the pre-fight press conference including Sugar Shane, his dad Jack Mosley and sister Serena. It was like old times.
Mosley Jr. (pictured with his father and grandfather) has been training under the guidance of Clarence “Bones” Adams, a former world champion whose gym is located in Las Vegas. They seem to be a perfect fit. The last time Mosley was in the ring he defeated Gabe Rosado by majority decision. It was supposed to be the other way around, but that’s Mosley.
“I’m kind of a throwback like the Golden Boy and like my dad,” said Mosley Jr. talking about De La Hoya and Mosley Sr.
Also featured in a co-main event is former world champion Luis Nery (33-1, 25 KOs) facing always exciting Azat Hovhannisyan (21-3, 17 KOs) in an elimination bout for the WBC featherweight champion down the road.
“Azat has never been knocked out,” noted Nery. “He’s a good fighter, a strong fighter.”
Hovhannisyan has been a regular on Golden Boy cards and is very popular. especially among Armenian fans. He looks for war.
“Nery is a good fighter. I’m prepared. I’m ready for it,” Hovhannisyan said at the Fox Theater media day.
A number of other solid fights are scheduled including flyweight contender Ricardo Sandoval and Hawaii’s Asa Stevens in separate supporting bouts.
Doors open at 3 p.m.
Nottingham Bash
It’s been almost a year when Leigh Wood escaped with a knockout victory in the last round. Here he returns and it does not get easier against Mexico’s murderous puncher Mauricio Lara on Saturday, Feb. 18, in Nottingham, England.
Wood (26-2, 16 KOs) won the WBA featherweight title and now defends against Lara (25-2-1, 18 KOs) at the Nottingham Arena. DAZN will stream the Matchroom Boxing card.
Both are bangers and each has a solid chin. Wood is fighting at home and has the height advantage. It should not go the distance and it might be bloody.
