Boxer Moncivais Dies Saturday After Friday Bout
Heavyweight boxer Francisco “Pancho” Moncivais died on Saturday after fighting in Gulfport, Mississippi on Friday night.
Moncivais, from Laurel, Mississippi fought Bobby O’Bannon of Mobile, Alabama at Hollywood Casino at Bay St. Louis. It was a scheduled four round bout. The 288 pound Moncivais, a Golden Gloves and national circuit vet, had debuted as a pro with a win in March.
Moncivais lost via KO, and was taken to Hancock Medical Center, two blocks from the venue, right after his bout, said Mississippi Athletic Commission assistant director Patrick Turner. He was stabilized, Turner said, and then taken to Gulfport Memorial. He was seen there by neurosurgeons, but Turner didn’t know if Moncivais, who suffered a subdural hematoma, underwent surgery. He was pronounced dead Saturday night.
Turner said Moncivais’ mother and uncle were at the bout. The spokesman said that the boxer was in good hands, as the ringside physician was Rowe Crowder, the chief of staff at Hancock Medical.
TSS send condolences to the family and friends of Pancho. The MAC will post information on a memorial in Pancho’s name soon.
