Boxing News: Former Olympic Medalist Williams Sentenced on Drug Charges
Former Olympic boxing medalist Ricardo Williams Jr. was sentenced on Wednesday to three years in prison for his part in a conspiracy to distribute cocaine. Prosecutors accused the boxer and two others of trying to pick up a package of drugs shipped to Cincinnati via FedEx.
The fallen welterweight apologized to the court, his family and community before sentencing. Williams further indicated he intends to stay prepared while in prison so he can resume his boxing career after he is released from prison.
Ricardo Williams Jr.'s fall from grace after winning a silver medal at the Sydney Olympics has been a hard one. After signing a contract worth $1.4 million upon turning professional, Williams – according to the Cincinnati Enquirer – spent much of his lucrative deal. With Williams (10-2) losing two of his last four fights prior to his legal problems, his diligence in training also had many questioning the Cincinnati boxer’s dedication to his craft.
If there is a second silver lining for Williams, it is that he is still only 23 years old. If he learns from his mistakes, there may still be time for Ricardo Williams Jr. to realize his potential.
