Boxing News: Golden Boy Promotions Signs Jonathan Oquendo
Golden Boy Promotions has announced the signing of highly regarded super bantamweight prospect Jonathan Oquendo to a promotional contract.
Oquendo, 4-0 with 2 knockouts, becomes the first signee of Golden Boy Promotions to hail from the boxing rich island of Puerto Rico.
“I hope to follow in the footsteps of all the great Puerto Rican Champions,” said the 21-year-old Oquendo, “and this is my first step on that quest. Golden Boy Promotions will get me the right fights to test me and to show my skills to all boxing fans, and this is a very exciting moment for me in my career.”
“We all know that Puerto Rican fighters are great warriors, and Jonathan Oquendo fits that mold perfectly,” said Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya. “He is the real deal, and we’re pleased to have him on the team.”
A native of Vega Alta, Oquendo had a stellar amateur career, winning a number of international events (He fell just short of making the 2004 Puerto Rican Olympic team), before turning pro in June of 2004 with a devastating third round stoppage of Yuniel Ramos.
In his last bout, on April 29, the Dennis Pantoja-trained Oquendo scored a near shutout four round decision over Alexander Alonso in Panama City.
Oquendo’s next bout will occur at a date and place to be announced.
