Boxing News: Trinidad vs. Wright Set For May 14
LAS VEGAS—Boxing promoter Don King has put together another blockbuster deal for Puerto Rican superstar and three-time world champion Felix “Tito” Trinidad—this time to face World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association light middleweight champion Ronald “Winky” Wright at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and on HBO Pay-Per-View on May 14. This match will be fought at 160 pounds.
Trinidad (41-1, 34 KOs) is the hottest boxer in the sport, who has earned his stature by never dodging a difficult match and always coming to fight. He will be tested yet again by the tough southpaw Wright (48-3, 25 KOs), who has looked very convincing in back-to-back wins against the enormously talented former world champion “Sugar” Shane Mosley.
Boxing promoter Don King said it wasn’t easy to get this deal done, but he is happy to make the announcement official.
It wasn’t easy to get this deal done—in fact it was quite difficult, but I persevered and my never-say-die attitude prevailed,” King said. “Whenever two great champions are asked to step into the ring against one another, a great deal of consideration takes place on both sides.
“I knew it was simply a matter of time before I would get this deal done because in the end both Tito and Winky like to fight, and these are boxers who just don’t walk away from a challenge. This is going to be a must-see fan’s fight and a great event.”
A cross-country media tour with King and both of the fighters is being planned with details and on-sale date information in the near future.
