Calm Before Saturday Storm in Brooklyn, and on NBC
All were on their best behavior on Thursday afternoon, ahead of the Saturday scraps in Brooklyn.
Nope, no trash talk, or promises to behead or staged shoving matches at the Edison Ballroom…and this fits with the re-imaging push being enacted by the Haymon Boxing crew.
The sport can be brutal but the combatants can and should be civil before and after the tussles, the desire seems to be, so that the masses don’t have an excuse to not latch on to this noble sport.
Main eventer Danny Garcia told us that he’s excited to go 4-0 in a Brooklyn and touted “DSG ON NBC.” Portions of the card will screen on NBC, in primetime, so he expects his fanbase to multiply after he does his thing.
His foe Lamont Peterson, a humble warrior not prone to trash talking in any era, said that he expects to get the W at Barclays Center. His bushy beard, though, will take an L. “The NY commission told me to cut it,” he said.
WBO middleweight champ Andy Lee, a lunch pail warrior from Ireland, announced that he’s feeling “dangerous” and told me that he’s over hitting pads and bags and wants to take it out on a human being. That person is Peter Quillin, a NYC resident who is seemingly in a good place mentally, after a year plus of tumult. Quillin told the media that he learned to fight sparring his little bro, after they wrapped pairs of socks around their pre-teen hands. He knows Lee can crack harder than lil bro, and said he’s ready for a “chess match” or a rumble.
Promoter Lou DiBella presided over the event and noted that doors open at 5 PM ET Saturday, with the first fight to kick off right after that.
