Cassidy and Levin Win Boxing Writer Awards
I just received a courtesy call from former president of the Boxing Writers Association of America, Bernard Fernandez, who was kind enough to call to share some good news. The tally for this year’s BWAA awards has just been completed and TSS writers bagged prizes in two categories.
Robert Cassidy Jr., who writes for The Sweet Science and Newsday, won first place in the News Story category for his “Ten-Count for Max Schmeling and Coley Wallace.” Cassidy’s historical bent, boxing’s in his very blood, not to mention his heartfelt prose, made those sleepy judges sit up and notice.
Also among this year’s winners, Zachary Levin tied for second place in the Boxing Column category, with Ron Borges and Tom Gerbasi, with his “A King’s Ransom,” an unflinching warts and essay from the Friar’s Club Roasting Pit deep in the heart of New York City, where Don King was this year’s honoree.
Fernandez made it a point of telling me that among the other website winners, those that won awards won only one, whereas The Sweet Science, if the batteries in my calculator haven’t failed, captured twice that number.
Congratulations gents!
