Castillo Five Pounds Over Weight
Jose Luis Castillo does it again
Everyone's worse fears were realized this afternoon at the weigh-in in Las Vegas when Jose Luis Castillo failed to make the 135 lb. lightweight limit.
Like some creepy replay of the shenanigans, aka scale tampering, in fight two with Diego Corrales where Castillo weighed 138½ lbs., Castillo weighed 139½ lbs. today to Corrales' 135 lbs.
The challenger was given a couple of hours to lose five pounds or he would be penalized – Nevada boxing officials said Castillo would forfeit up to 25 percent of his $900,000 purse if he was over the limit – and/or the fight for the title would be scotched.
If the fight goes on as planned it will be a non-title affair. Corrales' trainer, Joe Goossen, said “pull the plug on it. He (Corrales) drained himself to make 135 and the other guy didn't have to do it.”
Top Rank's Bob Arum said, “It's disgusting. If I was Corrales I wouldn't fight.”
Corrales said, “A lot of things are going through my head right now,” not least of which is whether or not to risk his health fighting Castillo Saturday night. Read more at the BLOG
