Chris Algieri Responds To Roach “Tough Kid” Comment
Chris Algieri got a kick out of the HBO 24/7, which ran Saturday night late-late, and told TSS his only regret is that more eps aren’t running.
Oh wait, there’s another; the show told viewers that his bed was unmade, and that one stung.
“I thought it was great,” the Huntington Heartthob told me. “I wish we had more episodes. A lot was jammed into one episode. My dog’s cameo was a nice surprise. Wish I had made my bed, too,” he lamented.
Oh, that not making my bed were the most most glaring misstep of these moments in time… “Yeah, the one day I don’t make my bed,” he growled.
I told him I did get a better sense of the pace and ferocity of his workouts. Boderline maniacal, I termed ’em. “Maniacal is probably the right word,” he said, chuckling.
The Long Islander didn’t want to pick up a mad patty and fire back at Coach Roach, who termed him a “tough kid” but said, “Tough kids don’t win big fights.”
I offered the Long Islander the chance to return fire…
“I don’t think anything needs to be said about that comment,” the pugilist-specialist stated, mixing in a response to Roach calling him a runner. “Last I checked, I am currently an undefeated world champion in boxing, not track.”
Does he think Freddie wants to draw him into some mind war-games? “Yeah, I’m not that guy that mind games will work on,” he said.
Oh, and lastly, what did Algieri think of the Sergey Kovalev master class on the premier professor of this and a few eras of the sweet science, Bernard Hopkins?
“I did watch. Hopkins is a slippery old vet, but Kovalev was too big, too strong, too sharp.”
And, I was curious, did he think that fight would unfold in the way it did? Because I didn’t see anyone saying that Hopkins would have just about zero successful moments over the course of 12 rounds…
“I predicted Hopkins to win, until I saw them in the ring together,” Algieri said. “I saw youth, size and hunger in the younger man.”
Hmmm..those things ring any bells on what Algieri backers believe THEY will be seeing on Nov. 22?
