Collazo On Khan Loss: “Mentally I Wasn’t There”

FORMER WELTERWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION LUIS COLLAZO RESTING AFTER LOSS AGAINST AMIR KHAN IN THE CO-MAIN EVENT OF “THE MOMENT: MAYWEATHER VS. MAIDANA”

PLANS FOR RING RETURN AT THE END OF THE SUMMER

BROOKLYN, NY (May 15, 2014) – After a hard fought defeat against Amir Khan on “THE MOMENT: Mayweather vs. Maidana” undercard on May 3, former welterweight world champion Luis Collazo returned to his home borough of Brooklyn to rest and spend time with his family before returning to the ring at the end of the summer.

Collazo suffered a minor injury to his left hand during his fight against Khan. According to his doctor, the tendons in his left hand will take between four and six weeks to return back to normal.

“The hardest thing about the fight was that I lost,” said Collazo. “I was there physically, but that’s about it. Mentally I wasn’t there. Right now I’m taking some time off to rest, allow my body to heal and get back to work.”

Collazo’s longtime trainer Nirmal Lorick shed some light on the timetable for Collazo’s return saying that the former world champion will rest his hand before a hopeful ring return in late August or early September.

Before the loss to Khan, Collazo put on a spectacular performance against former world champion Victor Ortiz on Jan. 30 in an early “Knockout of the Year” candidate. That win gave Collazo capped off four straight victories heading into his May 3 showdown against Khan.

“Khan did what he needed to do to win. We are confident that Luis will come back form this fight mentally stronger and ready for whoever is next,” said Collazo’s manager Wilson Naranjo.

Collazo has stayed positive since the loss and certainly isn’t ready to hang up his gloves, “It’s just the beginning. I’m on God’s time, not my time,” said Collazo. “To all my fans, I’m sorry for letting you down. To all the critics, keep doing your job. Peace and love, God bless.”
