Corley Only Former Champion to Fight in D.C. “Weekend of Champions”
Demarcus “Chop Chop” Corley [42-22, 24 KOs] was the only former champion to actually fulfill the bizarre Washington, D.C./Maryland/Virginia (DMV) “Weekend of Champions” fight card on Saturday in Washington, D.C. Corley easily cruised to a unanimous decision over Daniel Attah [28-19-1, 11 KOs].
In the main event, Maryland light heavyweight Alexander Johnson [16-2, 7 KOs] knocked out Henry Buchanan [21-4, 14 KOs] in the first round. Johnson, a southpaw, nailed Buchanan with a left cross that sent him crashing into the corner in a devastating fashion, leaving him unable to beat the ten-count.
Hector Camacho, Jr., was on the card but bowed out due to injury. Former IBF super middleweight champion Jeff Lacy was scheduled to fight Rayco Saunders, but the bout was cancelled at the end of the night with no announcement or reason. Unconfirmed reports are that the money for the fight was not available, but then Lacy and Saunders walked out to the ring as it was being broken down and were told to leave.
The poorly executed fight card was the culminating point of a “Celebrity Weekend of Champions” held in Washington, D.C., and hosted by GFS Entertainment. The weekend included a golf tournament and a “Night of Champions” ceremony held at the District’s Warner Theater that featured champions from the DMV region, including “Sugar” Ray Leonard, Mark “Too Sharp” Johnson, Sharmba Mitchell, William Joppy, Keith Holmes, Ronald “Winky” Wright and Corley.
