Crawford vs Indongo – Top Rank Boxing took center-stage in the pugilistic world on Saturday night, Aug. 19th, as they presented Terence Crawford vs Julius Indongo on ESPN. Promoter Bob Arum put together a solid 10-fight boxing card at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska. Here at TSS we brought you the results as they came in.
More than 12,000 fans packed into the building to see WBC and WBA world 140- pound champion Terence Crawford add the IBF and WBO world titles to his trophy case when he defeated Julius Indongo . In round 2, Crawford sent Indongo to the canvas with a right to the body followed by a left behind the ear. In the third round, a withering body shot sent Indongo down for the count . He lay writhing in pain as referee Jack Reiss tolled “10.” With the victory, Omaha’s Crawford united the four major world titles at 140 pounds.
The co-feature saw NABF light heavyweight champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk successfully defend his belt against Texas’ Craig Baker. Gvozdyk fought a methodical bout against the out-gunned Baker before ending the bout in the sixth round. A chopping overhand right sent Baker to the canvas. He beat the count, but Gvozdyk pinned him on the ropes and unleashed a barrage of punches that forced the referee to wave it off.
The ESPN broadcast opened with 2016 Olympic silver medalist Shakur Stevenson facing Argentina’s David Michel Paz. It was the third pro fight for the 20-year-old Stevenson who fought an efficient, risk-free fight while winning all six rounds on all three scorecards. Stevenson scored a nifty knockdown in round five while cruising his way to the UD victory.
The action got underway early as the evening got started with the two heavyweight bouts on the card. Both Dillian Whyte and Bryant Jennings made short work of their opponents to kick off the night. Jennings finished Daniel Martz in two and Whyte, making his U.S. debut, took out Malcolm Tann in three.
Light heavyweight Steve Nelson moved his record to 9-0 with a six round unanimous decision over Cesar Ruiz that saw Nelson win every round on every scorecard.
Veteran hard-hat Mikey Alvarado scored a scary fourth round knockout over 40-year-old Brazilian Sidney Siquiera. It was the fourth straight win for the 37-year-old comebacking Alvarado. The former junior welterweight world title challenger boosted his record to 37-4. Also, junior welterweight Mike Reed won a lopsided 10-round decision over Denver trial horse Robert Frankel.
Omaha, Nebraska’s own Kevin Ceja Ventura maintained his perfect record with a third round stoppage over opponent Baltazar Ramirez of Mexico. Ventura is now 8-0.
Long-time Top Rank fighter Mike Reed won a unanimous decision over journeyman Robert Frankel.
