Cunningham-Godfrey Fight Postponed
IBF World Championship Doubleheader Planned for March 26 Postponed
RELEASE>>>DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla.—An International Boxing Federation world championship doubleheader on March 26 featuring Steve Cunningham vs. Matt Godfrey and Cory Spinks vs. Cornelius Bundrage has been postponed.
No reason was given for the postponement, and there are grumbles emanating from some of the fighters that promoter Don King is to blame. So TSS reached out to the King crew, and got some clarification: Contractual issues between DKP and ESPN, regarding televising the matches on Friday Night Fights, were unable to be resolved.
A King source tells us that King had secured Treasure Island Hotel & Casino as the site and had accepted the type of money ESPN typically pays for Friday Night Fights, even though he stood to lose “hundreds of thousands of dollars” in the process of staging this event. But, the source said, King and ESPN hit a snafu in late-stage negotiations, resulting in the postponement.
ESPN FNF's bigs responded with a statement:
In line with our commitment to air quality boxing content, we had interest in airing the fights. Unfortunately, we couldn’t come to an agreement acceptable to both sides. We will continue to look for opportunities to acquire fights that serve our boxing fans. So…have at it TSS U. Read between the lines.
