David Tua And Monte Barrett Battle To Draw In AC
Monte Barrett told one and all that his Saturday night fight against David Tua would be his last.
Win, lose or draw, he told TSS, this will be it. After 12 rounds in Atlantic City, Barrett was feeling good as he awaited the ring announcers call of the judges decision.
When Barrett heard draw he was surprised and disappointed, for sure, especially after he knocked Tua down, with a four punch combo, in the 12th at the Tropicana on a Joe DeGuardia PPV card. Before that, ref Randy Neumann took a point from Tua for throwing Barrett to the mat.
The scores were 113-113, 113-113, and 115-113, Tua, resulting in a majority draw, and a fitting cap to the career of Barrett, who after said this sort of suspect judging is the type of scenario that makes a man exit the game.
This was not an encouraging night for the 37-year-old Tua (51-3-2, 43 KOs), while the 39-year-old Barrett (39-4-1, 20 KOs) can hold his head high, having exceeded expectations of those cynics who expected hed grab one last payday, and look for a soft place to land.
