Dee Hamaguchi Fights For Women’s Title Sunday In Oklahoma
Sweet Science photojournalist in Oklahoma title fight
Ladies Night comes to Remington Park on Sunday, June 18, when two thoroughbreds from the sport of women’s boxing square off in the first female title fight ever held in Oklahoma. The Sweet Science’s Deidre Hamaguchi squares off against Stephanie Dobbs in the ten-round main event for the vacant WIBA Intercontinental Mini Flyweight title (105) pounds. Four other bouts will precede the title bout.
Hamaguchi, the only female graduate of Yale University (1987) ever to compete in professional boxing, faces Dobbs, a local favorite from nearby Moore, for the third time. In April, 2003, the two fought to a four-round draw in Stateline, NV. Two months later Hamaguchi won a four-round unanimous decision in Laughlin, NV. Both fights were described in ringside press reports as the “fight of the night” for their relentless nonstop action. Fans at Remington Park on June 18 can expect more of the same – this time over ten rounds and with a title belt at stake.
Since their last bouts, Dobbs has fought extensively in the U.S., Europe and Asia. By contrast, Hamaguchi has had only three fights since decisioning Dobbs. Hamaguchi has concentrated on her dual careers of teaching high school mathematics and science in L.A. and her distinguished work as a photojournalist covering the sport of boxing. Despite her inactivity in the ring, Hamaguchi has maintained her training regimen and says she’s in ring ready condition. “Another bout with Stephanie was too good to pass up. I enjoyed the first two and I know the fans did as well and June 18 will be more of the same.”
The five bout card is being promoted by Po’ Boy Boxing, Jim Smith President, Oklahoma City. Ticket information is available at (405) 424-1000.
