Featherweight Champs Ducking Darchinyan?
IBF champion Vic Darchinyan wants to unify titles
IBF featherweight champion Vic “Raging Bull” Darchinyan (26-0, 21 KOs) is slated to fight on the Oct. 7 undercard of the Diego Corrales/Joel Casamayor at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
A unification bout with newly crowned WBO featherweight champion Omar Narvaez was suggested as the 30-year-old Sydney-based/Armenian-born boxer’s next opponent, but Narvaez and Thailand’s WBC champ Pongsaklek Wonjongkam have, reports the Sydney Morning Herald, rejected offers to fight the Raging Bull.
“The WBO and WBC champions have cancelled, they don’t want to fight me,” Darchinyan said. “I might fight a mandatory against [former IBF light flyweight champion] Jose Burgos. If they get him it will be good because I know he’s a tough fighter and it would be a good television fight.”
If the Oct. 7 fight with Burgos is confirmed, it would be, according to the Morning Herald, a massive day for Australian boxing, with Aussie light heavyweight Paul Briggs challenging Poland’s Tomasz Adamek for the WBC light heavyweight title in Chicago on that date.
No matter who he fights Oct. 7, Darchinyan is getting ready for all comers.
“I started my running and I’m doing my sprints, he said, and one more week and I will start sparring again.
