Alleged Murderer Felix Verdejo IS IN CUSTODY and Facing Three Federal charges
The news coming out of Puerto Rico regarding lightweight contender Felix Verdejo is troubling. Yesterday (Saturday, May 1) it was reported that Verdejo was a “person of interest” in the disappearance and death of a 27-year-old woman and was not cooperating with the authorities.
Today the story became more sordid. The latest wrinkle is that Verdejo has turned himself in.
The decedent is Keishla Marlen Rodriguez. According to Rodriguez’s family members, she was pregnant with Verdejo’s child. (Verdejo is married.) When her body was fished from a lagoon, her body was reportedly mangled beyond recognition. Forensic experts were able to identify her by dental records.
Here’s what appeared moments ago at U.S. News and World Report:
“A criminal complaint filed by the FBI accuses Verdejo of punching Keishla Rodríguez in the face and injecting her with a syringe filled with an unidentified substance bought at a public housing complex. It alleges that he then bound her arms and feet with wire and tied a heavy block to her before throwing her off a bridge at 8:30 a.m. Thursday.
The complaint states that Verdejo then shot at Rodríguez’s body as he stood on the bridge. A shell casing was found on the bridge.
The complaint says a witness it did not identify helped Verdejo kidnap and kill Rodríguez.”
The criminal complaint, authored by FBI Special Agent Lorenzo Vilanova Perez and signed by United States Magistrate Judge Giselle Lopez-Soler, states that there is probable cause to charge Verdejo with violating three federal laws: carjacking resulting in death, kidnapping resulting in death, and intentionally killing an unborn child.
An earlier version of this story reported that authorities had determined that Rodriguez’s last known location prior to her Wednesday disappearance was at Verdejo’s home and that the police had cell phone records that show multiple calls between Verdejo and Rodriguez on the day she disappeared.
Verdejo represented Puerto Rico in the 2012 London Olympics where he lost to Vasiliy Lomachenko in the quarterfinals. Promoted by Top Rank, he is 27-2 as a pro. In his most recent fight, he was upset by Masayoshi Nakatani who stopped him in the ninth round at the MGM Bubble in Las Vegas.
This is a fast-developing story. Stay tuned.
