Former World Titlist Montell Griffin Returning To The Ring At 45
Former WBC World Lightheavyweight Champion Montell Griffin has announced he will be making a comeback to boxing, at 45 years old.
Griffin told reporters in his hometown of Chicago that he has been working with promoter Bobby Hitz and is likely to come back on the Hitz Entertainment card scheduled for November 25th at the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana.
Griffin last fought in August of 2011, when he won a unanimous decision in an 8 round bout over journeyman DeAndrey Abron. When asked what made him look for another fight four years later, Griffin stated, “I always take the sport serious and with respect and I have not been far. I have been a sparring partner for Andrzej Fonfara for several years for example, and recently I have been working with him in the build-up to this October 16th fight he has with Nathan Cleverly. I feel very good physically and sparring with him on such a high level made me feel that edge to compete again.”
Griffin is most remembered as being the first man to blemish the record of Roy Jones Jr, and his career record stands at an impressive (50-8-1). He learned boxing in his youth from his father, who was a trainer for the United States Olympic boxing team, and he also had a fine amateur career that culminated in being a member of the 1992 U.S. team that competed at the Barcelona Games.
Griffin went on to say, “I’m starting my official training camp four weeks before the fight, but with sparring and the other things ‘ve been doing, I have been having a pre-camp so I will be in shape heading into the four week training period. I will be ready.”
Griffin’s opponent is yet to be decided, and Griffin is planning his comeback in the cruiserweight division.
