Frank Warren Looks At Calzaghe’s Future
Warren expects huge fight for Joe Calzaghe in September
Even though the WBO and IBF super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe pulled out of a June 8 title defense with a damaged hand, his promoter Frank Warren is optimistic about his champ’s prospects for the future.
“We have a couple of ideas about who he will meet,” Warren told the BBC, but we’re keeping them quiet until the contract is signed. As soon as a name gets out, the money goes up, but it will be a huge fight.”
But who exactly is Joe fighting in September? That’s what the world wants to know.
“Everyone will be pleased when they hear the name, said Warren cryptically, especially if our top target comes through.
“When Joe fights in the autumn he’ll show again why he’s the best fighter I’ve ever been involved with.”
The most talked about potential opponents, super middleweight champions Markus Beyer (WBC) and Mikkel Kessler (WBA), have agreed in principle to meet each other for a unification bout in Denmark in October, so they’re out of the running
Roy Jones Jr. has been calling out Calzaghe, but RJJ first has to get by Prince Badi Ajamu next month in Idaho.
Glen Johnson was supposed to fight Calzaghe at the Millennium Stadium before Calzaghe’s withdrawal due to injury, and is expected to face Clinton Woods, another potential Calzaghe rival, instead.
Bernard Hopkins, should he un-retire, if he has in fact retired, would be a compelling adversary for Joe C., as would the winner of Saturday’s middleweight title fight between Jermain Taylor and Winky Wright.
There are, obviously, lots of options for Joe Calzaghe depending on how well his hand heals and if it holds up in the gym.
