Gary Shaw and Roc Nation Part Ways
As far as boxing marriages go, put this one in the Britney Spears-Jason Alexander pairing category: Yep, Gary Shaw, the NJ-based promoter with four decades of wisdom tucked into his elastic waistband, and Roc Nation boxing, the newly formed entity helmed by Jay Z, have parted ways.
It was an amicable separation, said Shaw, who told me he will be back overseeing Gary Shaw Promotions, which he had not fully unbundled.
The marriage was cemented before the holidays, and became un-cemented after it became clear to Shaw and the Roc crew that they were not in sync. Dan Rafael first reported the conscious uncoupling.
“I’m doing fine. We’re parting as friends, they were businesslike, and we left as friends,” Shaw said. “It was just another step in my life as a promoter, a blip on the screen.”
Roc spokesman Ron Berkowitz weighed in: “Roc Nation Sports and Gary Shaw Productions have mutually agreed to part ways as a deal could not be finalized,” he said. “Roc Nation Sports wishes Gary Shaw nothing but the best of luck and we look forward to working with him and his fighters should any opportunities present themselves.” Shaw told me that the show will go on with his fighter Bryant Jennings, against Wladimir Klitschko on April 25. “He’s a Gary Shaw fighter,” the promoter turned exec turned promoter again said. “With Roc, we agreed to disagree.”
