Gennady “Triple G” Golovkin Wants Canelo’s Belt, But First Comes Wade.
Golovkin Wants Canelo’s Belt – Gennady “GGG” Golovkin may be the most dominant middleweight in the world today but even in his adopted hometown of Los Angeles the topic of discussion swerves into something different than expected, like downtown traffic.
Golovkin (34-0, 31 Kos) arrived at the Conga Room in L.A. Live on Tuesday to discuss the signed fight with undefeated Dominic Wade (18-0, 12 Kos) on April 23, at the Inglewood Forum. The K-2 Promotions event will also feature Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez and be televised on HBO.
But like L.A. traffic it swerved into something else.
“When will you fight Canelo?” asked more than one.
Golovkin did not deflect the question; he merely countered it with a sharp answer of meeting Saul “Canelo” Alvarez when the Mexican star signs the contract.
“Of course I’m ready to fight him,” said Golovkin about Alvarez. “I need all the belts and the Ring belt.”
The middleweight from Kazakhstan does not hide that his goal remains to be undisputed middleweight champion.
“Look at my situation. People said he’s (Canelo) very small,” said Golovkin at the Conga Room. “I need my fight, I need my Ring belt. Canelo or Khan, Cotto, whatever. Yes, I need a chance. Give me a chance.”
WBC titlist Alvarez has signed to face Amir Khan on May 7 in Las Vegas. The winner of that fight has agreed to face the winner between Golovkin and Wade.
Golovkin wants that green WBC belt in his hand.
Tom Loeffler of K-2 Promotions explained that papers have been signed and that his charge will be allowed to fight for the WBC title one way or another.
“Everything is signed, the winner of his fight will fight the winner of the Canelo-Khan fight. Canelo has taken big risk fights before for much less money,” said Loeffler adding that Golden Boy Promotions has 15 days after that fight in May to agree to a fight or Alvarez is stripped of the WBC title. “There’s no animosity there. Just like Gennady said, whether it was Cotto last year or Canelo this year or Khan, he doesn’t care who he has to fight to get the belt. He just wants the belt.”
Wade
People have seemingly forgotten about Wade who did not make the press conference due to winter storms in the East Coast.
Abel Sanchez, who trains Golovkin, did not lose track of the mandatory challenger.
“It’s a dangerous fight. Dominic Wade is a guy I followed in the amateurs. I know a lot about him,” said Sanchez. “I’m sure he is very motivated.”
Sanchez said that Wade reminds him of a right-handed Willie Monroe “with a little more pop.”
Golovkin has taken heed.
“Dominic Wade is undefeated and mandatory challenger,” said Golovkin. “He’s hungry. I remember my situation and his is like mine right now. I think he has a good situation. He can be a champion.”
No detours for Golovkin. The road to the WBC belt must go through Wade.

Tickets
Loeffler said ticket sales have gone briskly with 6,000 of the 16,000 already sold. It’s heading toward a sell-out at the Inglewood Forum.
“We’ve already sold four times as many tickets as we did the last time Gennady fought at the Forum,” said Loeffler. “Gennady’s fans have learned that if you want to see Gennady fight you have to buy tickets early.”
For tickets go to Ticketmaster.com or call (800) 745-3000. Ticket prices are $30, 60, 100, 200, 300 and $400.
