HBO Strongly Disputes Breitbart/Kovalev/Ammo Story

As far as trustworthy media sources go, the Breitbart website and staff has a mixed reputation. Partisans who are aligned with their mission to embrace far right dogma, push pro-gun and anti-union stances and smear rivals of those mindsets see their material as gospel, while others…don’t.

An intersection of politics and sports popped up early Friday, when writer Awr Hawkins posted a story on Breitbart.com which maintains that HBO asked Sergey Kovalev to NOT wear a patch advertising a company which sells gun ammo in the ring at Mandalay Bay tonight. The story caught my eye, being that I see our national obsession with the right to secure and bear arms with a flippant ease as a bizarre and sad and demented obsession, which results the sort of regular occurences of massacres we see featured every other month. If one of the five best fighters on the planet is proudly staking out a stance as a pro-gun advocate, or is simply looking to make extra cash through an endoresment deal, I think that qualifies as being newsworthy. (It was news-worthy when PBC boxer Adrian Broner posted prank pics of himself holding a toy gun, right on the heels of the last massacre which briefly jolted citizens not numbed to the assembly line of horror which our society and system too easily condone and accept. The same scrutiny should be applied across the board, so yes, the Kovalev/guns and ammo angle is in my sights.)

The story quotes the president of the ammo company, and in it, he says that he was that HBO put their foot down, versus the ammo ad. “He was told…the decision had come from HBO.”

Well, HBO says otherwise, loudly. A spokesman for the cabler told me, “It didn’t happen. HBO never made a request or demand. The story is 100 percent untrue.”

Now, from my chair, I think it would be well within their rights for HBO to encourage Kovalev, who has had a couple brushes with iffy choices in word-choice and posting of insensitive material to social media, to indeed, choose to NOT wear that endorsement patch. If you read the news, you see these POS murderers, who I won’t name,  have ties to white pride organizations and philosophies. So, it behooves boxers who want to be embraced by the masses to steer clear of anything which might remind the public of those incidents.

Rarely does a “legitimate” media source get challenged so directly. The onus is on Breitbart and the writer to answer this challenge and either furnish conclusive proof, or retract. Based on their track record, my breath is not being held…
