Jason Quigley Media Day and more SoCal Fight Chatter

SANTA MONICA, Ca.-With one week before entering the boxing ring Ireland’s Jason Quigley met with the media in a basement boxing gym on Wednesday.

His stablemate Michael Conlan fights on St. Patrick’s Day in New York.

Quigley doesn’t envy him.

“It’s cold over there,” he said with a chuckle.

Quigley has made sunny California his home base for the past three years and the warmer temperatures agree with him. He’s also built a solid fan base comprised of boxing crazy Mexican fans and of course his Irish constituency.

“They spend a lot of money to come down and see me,” Quigley says.

Next Thursday, March 23, Quigley (12-0) meets Glen Tapia for the vacant NABF middleweight title at Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio. The Golden Boy Promotions fight card officially begins the first of many ESPN telecasts.

“I’m honored to be a part of it,” Quigley said.

Also on the same card will be Riverside’s Mauricio “El Maestro” Herrera in a welterweight clash with Hector Velasquez.

Herrera just can’t seem to convince the judges that he’s the victor. But he remains one of the most skilled boxers in the world.

Back to Quigley.

The Irish middleweight from Donegal, Ireland currently has a ranking of number 10 according to the WBA. This will be his first main event and first time headlining an entire fight card.

Facing him will be Tapia who has back-to-back losses and needs a win to remain relevant or sent to the back of the bus.

“I expect the best Tapia there is,” said Quigley, adding that he knows how much the East Coast fighter needs a win. “A single punch can change things.”

Quigley has an aggressive fan-friendly style that has endeared him to local Southern California fans the same way that current WBA, WBC and IBF middleweight titlist Gennady “GGG” Golovkin did when he first arrived several years ago.

Knockouts please fans.

Speaking of Golovkin, the Irish middleweight expects Triple G to encounter the toughest fight yet of his pro career. But ultimately he expects the Kazakhstani to emerge victorious.

“Golovkin knows what to do though he’s aggressive,” said Quigley, adding that he expects Golovkin to win by stoppage late in the fight.

Next Thursday, Quigley faces his most stringent test.

Landeros in Mexico

Sixteen-year-old Joseph Landeros (5-0, 5 KOs) seeks his sixth victory when he travels to Tijuana, Mexico and faces Alexander Leon in a bantamweight fight for the La Voz del Boxeo belt on Thursday March 16. The boxing card takes place at the Escape Club on Revolucion y Calle 6ta. The first bout begins at 6 p.m.

Landeros attends high school in Riverside, California. He began his pro career at age 15 in Mexico and has collected five wins as a professional.

Next Thursday March 23, in downtown Los Angeles, featherweight prospect Daniel “Twitch” Franco (15-0-3, 10 KOs) meets former contender Christopher Martin (29-8-3, 9 KOs) in the main event.
