Jhonny González Beats Clive Atwell in Mexico
Acapulco–A cut on the left eyebrow of the current WBC featherweight champion Jhonny
González forced the referee to stop the match in the tenth round of his fight against Guyanas’ Clive Atwell, on Saturday, May 24 in Acapulco, México.
At the moment of the stoppage, the Mexicano González was ahead in the scorecards, by scores of 99-89, 96-92 and 98-90.
The cut came after a headbutt by Atwell in the tenth round, and the slice was bleeding profusely. Referee Laurence Cole determined the champion was unable to continue.
Atwell, 25 years old and with three victories in 2013, had points deducted after fouling Gonzalez in rounds seven and ten, both off headbutts.
Even though González (56-8-0, 47 KOs) retained his crown, his performance wasn’t good, and Atwell (12-1-1, 7 KOs) was a rival that showed more intentions of surviving that winning the 126 pound belt.
Two aspects contributed to the faded showing: Atwell’s elusive and conservative style and González’ lack of accuracy and boxing skills. He looked very different from the Gonzalez that took the belt from Abner Mares in August of 2013.
Even though Gonzalez wasn’t able to show his punching power, he was the better man in the ring and landed the better punches, while Atwell focused on his ultra-defensive plan that had him running around the ring from beginning to end.
