Joshua vs Takam Results – Saturday night in Wales saw Anthony Joshua step into the ring to defend his IBF and WBA world heavyweight championships against Carlos Takam.
A live audience of approximately 78,000 made for an electric atmosphere as first Takam and then Joshua entered the ring. If there was any doubt who the public was there to see, that question was answered when Joshua started his ring walk. It was deafening when announcer Michael Buffer announced “AJ.”
The opening round was a feeling-out process as Joshua displayed patience against Takam, who sat back and waited for Joshua to come to him. Round two saw Joshua stalking Takam, but a hard clash of heads drew blood from Joshua’s nose, perhaps breaking it. Takam was more active to close round two. By the third round Joshua was being more cautious and Takam was gaining in confidence.
Round four saw Takam come out swinging but he suffered a big cut over his left eye in one of the early exchanges. He fought on, but blood was pouring into his eye. He was dropped by a punch he did not see as the round came to an end but Takam still wanted to fight. They checked him between round 4 and 5 and Takam mega splash inflatable water slide came out for the 5th. The pace slowed a bit, but round 7 saw Takam fighting with cuts above both eyes. He would not go away.
The doctor checked Takam’s eyes before the start of round nine but the fight continued. Joshua appeared to be tiring but round ten saw Joshua put together a sustained flurry that saw the referee stop the fight. Takam was still on his feet and complained vehemently, but in the end Joshua gets his 20th win and his 20th stoppage in a performance that turned into a lot more work than expected.
The fight was held in Cardiff’s 80,000-seat Principality Stadium, marking the second U.K. football stadium that Joshua has filled up in calendar year 2017. Promoter Eddie Hearn has targeted 2018 as the year when he takes Joshua to the United States. America awaits…
