Julio Diaz In the Mix To Fight Provodnikov
Pssst, hey. You. Wanna make half a mill? Nah, I’m not kiddin…Whaddya gotta do? Simple. Get on a plane, train, whatever…to Russia. With gloves. And fight “the Siberian Rocky.” Whaddya say, you want the dough?
A version of that has been playing out on the phone of Vadim Kornilov, the manager to Ruslan Provodnikov, who wants to fight SOMEBODY in Russia on Nov. 28.
You might have heard that Jose Luis Castillo, the 40-year-old faded ex champ, has said yes. “He is the frontrunner,” Kornilov told me. “And how much does he have left? He just had back to back wins. Do you think Julio Diaz is better?”
Maybe, maybe not. Diaz might well have more left in the tank, despite having lost three in a row. “So, it’s not a done deal. Castillo is a bigger name in Russia. But we are okay with either guy. We can try and push what we want but everybody else said no to a half million and we don’t have any more money. Diaz might get knocked out by Ruslan sooner than Castillo…it all depends what kind of shape Castillo is in.”
