LA.’s Danny Roman Grabs NABF Super Bantam Title

ONTARIO, CALIF.-Danny Roman captured the NABF super bantamweight title by using his height against Mexico’s Daniel Noriega on Friday night.

Roman (15-2-1, 5 Kos) used his reach and combination punching before a crowd of more than 1,200 at the Doubletree Hotel to defeat Torreon, Mexico’s Noriega (27-10-1). The Thompson Boxing Promotions fight was not televised.

It was not an easy fight for Roman, who constantly had Noriega pressing forward in every round. The shorter Mexican fighter knew how to keep the pressure on and was never hurt by any of Roman’s punches. Neither was Roman.

After 10 rounds the judges scored the fight 100-90 twice and 98-92 for Roman. One of the judges Patrick Connolly turned in a judges score card for the final time. He retired after this fight following 37 years as a boxing judge.

San Pedro’s Isaac Zarate (12-1-1, 2 Kos) never seems to have an easy fight. Against fellow southpaw Jesus Serrano (7-3-2, 5 Kos) of Nogales, Mexico he found himself trapped against the ropes taking uppercuts. Then he figured things out in the third round and began to find the range. In round four a digging left hand to the body from Zarate found the target and down went Serrano. He got up but couldn’t stay upright and referee Eddie Hernandez stopped the fight at 2:44 of the fourth round. It was another great rally from Zarate.

Santa Ana’s Erick Ituarte (11-1-1, 2 Kos) and Tijuana’s Pedro Lopez (4-2) battled evenly for the first three rounds then things changed. Ituarte fired one-two’s that couldn’t miss the mark and Lopez was unable to compete evenly from the fourth round on. There were no knockdowns in the super featherweight fight that ended after six rounds. The judges scored it 60-54 twice and 59-55 for Ituarte.

The heavy-handed Jose “Pepito” Haro (10-1-1, 6 Kos) stunned Mexico’s Miguel “Yaqui” Tamayo (16-14-2, 14 Kos) multiple times but could never do more than raise a smile from the Gumby-like fighter. After six rounds Utah’s Haro won by unanimous decision 60-54 on all three cards of the super bantamweight fight.

Scott Alexander (10-1-1, 6 Kos) connected with a counter left hook to floor Dan Biddle (9-4, 5 Kos) early in the first round during an exchange. Biddle backed off but Alexander didn’t let him off the hook. Some punishing body shots dropped Biddle again as the referee counted him out at 2:37 of the opening round.
