Lomachenko vs Walters Appears To Be Set
Lomachenko vs Walters – Earlier today, WBO World Featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko took to social media to confirm his much rumored bout with Nicholas Walters.
Promoter Bob Arum has been working on this match-up for several months, and he recently spoke out about HBO’s lack of interest in the match-up. Boxingscene.com reported Arum’s comments “You see, I am trying to get it on HBO, well that remians to be seen. HBO is not the only fish in the sea. I want to get that fight shown. I want to move forward with that double-header and I am sure I’ll be able to”.
The double-header Arum is referring to also includes a Super Lightweight match-up between WBC titleholder Viktor Postol and Adrian Granados. Arum also mentioned Postol as a fighter not getting the attention of HBO and their executive, Peter Nelson.
Though Lomachenko’s Tweet does not give a specific date, but Arum is targetting April 30th in New York or Los Angeles.
Walters is 26-0-1 and he is a former WBA World Champion at Featherweight. He lost that belt on the scales, but the lone blemish on his record came in his last outing, as he fought Jason Sosa to a draw this past December.
Lomachenko is 5-1 in his short pro career, but he is one of the most decorated amateur fighters in history and the skill and technique have already shown themselves. Despite the low number of professional fights, he took the fast track and already holds the WBO World Featherweight title.
Arum appears to be leaning towards the Showtime Network to show this fight, as neither fighter is tied to HBO exclusively and Arum appears to have grown tired of resistance from HBO. More news to come on this one, to be sure, but if the match is finalized, it is a major super-fight of two of the world’s most talented pugilists.
