MALIGNAGGI: “Pacquiao-Algieri Is A Tough Fight To Call”
In a short time, he has emerged as a top tier analyst who can be relied upon to furnish cogent insight on both the technical and mental aspects which influence success or failure in the ring. His own ring future is up in the air, he told me he will be figuring out whether he hangs up the mitts or soldiers on after the holidays, but Paul Malignaggi was kind enough to weigh in with his take on the Saturday clash between The Congressman and the Headed-To-Med-School heartthrob.
So, Paulie, Pride of Bensonhurst, does the Long Island hitter not too long removed from doing personal training gigs to overfed suburbanites on the Island have a shot in beating Pacman in Macau?
“He’s got a shot,” the 33-6 boxer, a 140 or 147 pound champ, told TSS. “It should be a good fight. This will be tactical boxing.”
Malignaggi, who turns 34 on Nov. 23, said that Manny has the edge in hand speed and ability to get angles on his foe. Oh, and pop.. ”Yes, those are Manny’s edges…also the footspeed might be Manny, too, but Algieri has more range, being that he’s taller and controlling range might be an intricate part of winning the fight.” That’s coming from someone who has a real good sense of the import of dictating range, and how to pull that off against someone with higher caliber weaponry than you. “It’s a tough fight to call.”
He continued: “It’s not always easy to jab a southpaw, there’s a fundamental way of doing it. We’ll see if Algieri can do it, he definitely would have an advantage in controlling range if he does.”
There you have it, some insights from a guy who knows from whence he speaks…bigtime.
