Matchroom Fight Results: Buatsi TKOs Calic; Chantelle Cameron Wins a World Title
Lightweight contender Joshua Buatsi discovered just where his talent puts him as a light heavyweight contender and Chantelle Cameron became the second female British fighter to win a world title on Sunday.
Buatsi (13-0, 11 KOs) remained undefeated but his opponent Marco Calic (11-1, 6 KOs) showed that Butasi is not quite ready for the elite light heavyweights at Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes, England. But he did get another stoppage win despite the rough going.
Early on Calic used his longer reach and quick combinations to gain the early advantage. By the third round Buatsi’s left eye swelled and nearly closed.
Around the fifth round a solid body attack quickly regained the momentum for Buatsi and he took control of the fight.
Despite a swollen eye Buatsi boosted his attack to the body and head with stiff jabs and a body attack. A counter overhand right connected in the seventh round and Buatsi followed up with a barrage of blows that sent Calic reeling to the ground. He beat the count but his cornerman showed the white towel signifying surrender.
The referee Michael Alexander stopped the fight at 2:09 of the seventh round to give Buatsi the win by technical knockout. He retains the WBA International light heavyweight title.
“Props to Calic,” said Buatsi. “He pushed me all the way.”
Chantelle Wins World title
England gained a second female world champion as Chantelle Cameron (13-0, 7 KOs) dominated Brazil’s Adriana Dos Santos Araujo (6-1) to win by unanimous decision and capture the vacant WBC super lightweight world title.
Cameron and Araujo had met before in the amateur world but it’s a far different arena in the prizefighting world. The British fighter from nearby Northampton won almost every round with a nonstop attack of three and four-punch combinations and then moving away from potential counter-attacks.
It proved highly successful against Araujo who was over-weight and not eligible to win the world title. The Brazilian was six pounds over the 140-pound weight limit.
Cameron has been fighting professionally since 2017 and has been unable to attract her dream opponent Katie Taylor of Ireland. She decided moving up in weight to fight for the super lightweight world title was a fortunate alternative and accepted the move up.
Once the fight started it was apparent that Araujo was much bigger and stronger with the added weight. But she was also slower and Cameron took advantage speed-wise with her quick combinations. The fight was never in doubt.
“She was a lot heavier and I could feel the weight difference,” said Cameron. “She wasn’t professional enough to make the weight., but I knew no matter what, I was becoming the champion.“
All three judges scored the fight 100-90 for Cameron who becomes the new WBC super lightweight titlist and joins Terri Harper the WBC super featherweight titlist as England’s two female world champions.
