ONTARIO, Calif.-Lightweight prospect Michael Dutchover blazed by Sergio Ramirez by knockout and a battle of undefeated bantamweights was marred by an errant knockdown on Friday evening.
On a night when one prospect was fighting in the Mid-West, it was Dutchover (10-0, 7 KOs) grabbing an impressive knockout win against Ramirez (5-3) at the Doubletree Hotel on the Thompson Boxing Promotions fight card.
Originally from Texas, Dutchover (pictured on the left; Ramirez on the right) showed the California crowd what he’s all about as he dominated the first round with boxing, then lowered the boom in the second round with a devastating one-punch knockout. The end came at 43 seconds of round two.
Now training in Santa Fe Springs, Calif. the lightweight prospect was a winner who looked ready for the next step.
Santa Ana’s Mario Hernandez (7-0, 3 KOs) bulled his way to victory to hand Riverside’s Jonah Flores (5-1) his first defeat as a pro after six rounds in a bantamweight contest. An erroneous knockdown ruled by the referee in the third round seemed to lead to the downfall of Flores who had several good rounds but only one judge gave him two rounds.
Hernandez continuously pushed Flores against the ropes throughout the fight. In the third round Flores seemed to find the antidote with his speed but after connecting with a punch the Riverside fighter tripped over the referee or the fighter’s leg and went to the floor. The referee did not see it but ruled a knockdown and gave a count against Flores. After that, the energy seemed to drain from Flores who protested mildly to the referee.
Flores had his moments especially in the sixth and last round as he absorbed Hernandez’s touch punches and countered with booming shots. But only one judge valued the harder blows. After six rounds the judges scored it 60-53, 60-54, 58-55 for Hernandez.
It was a fight that was made last-minute and both willingly accepted to fight each other. Flores gained a learning experience and Hernandez emerged with the win.
Other Bouts
Undefeated Ruben Torres (6-0, 5 KOs) had his hands full with Ensenada, Mexico’s Bogar Padilla (1-2) who had more problems with his mouthpiece than incoming fire. Four times he lost his mouth guard and referee Rudy Barragan deducted a point in the fourth round of the super lightweight clash. Torres had several inches in height over Padilla but the each round was closely contested and each landed flush left hooks. Both fighters showed good chins in the many exchanges. All three judges saw it 40-35 for Torres but each round was very close.
Michael Alcantara (6-0, 1 KO) won by unanimous decision over Francisco Lapizco (8-7, 2 KOs) after four rounds in a bantamweight match. Alcantara fights out of Sylmar, Calif. and was the more active and accurate puncher. Uppercuts were the answer for the first two rounds against Obregon, Mexico’s Lapizco who had his moments but not enough. Two judges scored it 39-37 and the third saw it 40-36 for Alcantara.
A heavyweight bout between San Joaquin Valley fighters saw Bakersfield’s Jason Soto (1-0) win his pro debut by technical knockout over Fresno’s Samuel Perez (0-1) at 2:15 of the second round. Right hands did the job as Perez repeatedly turned his back after the blows forcing referee Jerry Cantu to end the fight.
In Sloan, Iowa, lightweight prospect Zhora Hamazaryan (9-1) lost a split decision to Thomas Mattice (11-0) despite knocking him down in the second round. The fight was televised on Showtime.
Hamazaryan, 22, is a Thompson Boxing fighter.
