Mora Volunteers To Face Cotto
The search continues. Apparently, they are looking high, low, and everywhere in between for a foe for Miguel Cotto.
Yes, it does seem like foe searches in this day and age drag on more than they used to, does it not? Now, that might just because of the ease of transmission of information, more rumors get reported into the “news” stream, so we are all actually more aware of the process more than we used to be. Then again, mega-stars like a Cotto make so much per fight, they really only fight max twice a year, so it makes sense that they can take their sweet time in choosing just the right target.
Speaking of targets. We’ve heard Cornelius Bundrage was the lead dog to get Cotto’s next slot, which comes June 6 in NYC. But that trial balloon was floated, and it seems like TV might not dig that choice. I head also that The Contender alum Sergio Mora is int he mix. True or false, Latin Snake?
“Promoter Lou Dibella and I were hoping for that fight thinking I’ll be less risk and a valid WBC middleweight title defense,” the 34-year-old hitter from Cali told me. “But nothing. I feel I make more sense than (Jorge) Heiland and K9 (two other rumored possibilities).”
Dibella touched base on the subject. “My phone line is open and I am all ears,” Brooklyn Lou said. “Sergio is a skilled, true middleweight and would love the opportunity to challenge Cotto. No one has called or expressed interest.”
Cotto advisor Gaby Penagaricano told me two days ago when word came out that Cotto had settled on K9, “Opponent not set yet.” Word dropped then that maybe K9 was entertaining an offer to fight Tim Bradley, which had some chuckling, as they assumed Top Rank would be doing that fight to mess up Cotto’s game, in exchange for him spurning them.
Stay tuned, this deal ain’t a done one…
