MSG Showing Wilfredo Gomez-Rocky Lockridge (1985)
MSG Network’s Friday Night Fights
Tonight at 9:00 p.m. on MSG Network’s “Friday Night Fights,” hosted by John Duddy and Mark Breland: Wilfredo Gomez vs. Rocky Lockridge (5/19/85).
Before Felix “Tito” Trinidad and Hector “Macho” Camacho, the pride of Puerto Rican boxing was Wilfredo Gomez. In what would be his final world title championship, the legendary Gomez defeated Rocky Lockridge at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum in San Juan by unanimous decision – a controversial outcome as Lockridge appeared to have the hometown favorite beat in the majority of the 15 round battle. The full round bout was also surprising in that it didn’t end in a knockout, the result of 42 of Gomez’s 44 professional wins.
Duddy: “Man, Gomez can punch.”
Breland: “That he can, but he’ll hit you wherever he can. He’ll hit you in the bottom of your feet – a dirty fighter – but a lot of power and he’ll get you out of there.”
Duddy: “And Lockridge, 36 KOs himself and he also won the world title with a first round knockout of Roger Mayweather…tough guy.”
Breland: “A very tough fighter, a very crafty fighter.”
